I decided to update my review. It's still holding out strong, and works like a champ! We use it when we go camping to keep our items cooled. We get quite a few looks from other campers when we break out the ice cream bars for an after-dinner snack. They come over and ask how is this possible. I am always showing them this cooler.
It's still super efficient in the power draw. When I plug it in my truck, I have a small solar panel that takes care of charging the battery up during the day.
We also have been using it as a spare freezer during the Holidays. I have had this cooler for quite a few years now. It's a hard price 'pill' to swallow, but it sure pays off in the long run.

Still no problems to report. We have taken our cooler on numerous trips down south and loaded up both sides with freezer and frozen 'goodies' from Costco. I pre-chill it down the night before and actually the fan does turn off (When it's not needed). We watched a movie and enjoyed a nice lunch while powered via my 24v lawnmower battery. I'm sure the battery could last for at least 24 hours. (Stay tuned for that update in the near future.)
Every time we keep using it, it just 'works'.. Dometic has been around for quite some time and they know how to manufacture top-notch products.
If you are still on the fence, you can't go wrong. Again, did I mention this is a BEAST (And super heavy)? ;)
+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Update: 10/27/2017 +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
Our landlord is taking forever to get us a replacement freezer/fridge for the house... We are super upset, but thankful that the cooler is running great keeping out items cool. It's inconvenient that we have to go to the garage to pull out our frozen items, but thankful this is working great without a hitch. We still don't know when they will be ordering it..
+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Update: 10/18/2017 +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
So, our standup fridge/freezer decided to stop defrosting.. It froze up and preventing to cool both the freezer and fridge. We have a standup freezer which we moved all of the freezer items in there. We used both sides on our cooler as a fridge and packed it up. Since we live in a rural area, it's going to take a few days before we get our new fridge/freezer. Both compartments are keeping all contents at the correct temperature. We are very happy to have this available as a backup for this emergency. I have updated my initial 4 stars to 5.
+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Update: 9/23/2017 +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
We packed up our lunch in the smaller side and set it to be the fridge. The larger compartment we set it to be the freezer. Since we were close to a larger grocery store, we stopped on the way back to pick up some groceries. Since both of our vehicles turn off the cigarette lighter when the engine is off, I created a cable that allows me to utilize my 24v lawnmower battery as a power pack while the vehicle is off.
The cooler had no issues keeping temperature of both compartments with the insulated cover installed. The cooler was in a hot car, with the sun beating down on one side of the cooler. Both compartments kept their contents at the right temperature. Again, it was overkill for a day outing, but it didn't let us down. We are very happy.
+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Update: 9/18/2017 +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
I took it this last Saturday when I needed to do some shopping to pick up some groceries (Our closest Wally World is ~1 hour away). I powered it on the night before to cool down both compartments. I needed the larger compartment a freezer, and the smaller compartment as the fridge. After I finished shopping and loaded up the cooler, I had plenty of room to spare on both sides. We normally don't purchase ice cream due to it being a gelato texture when we get home. Once it re-freezes, it crystallizes and affects the taste. In the 90 degree weather in the car while I was shopping (45 minutes), both compartments warmed up a little bit (I am receiving the cooler insulator today to help. Cigarette lighter turns off when the car is off.) When I got home, the ice cream was still rock hard (and other frozen items), while the refrigerated items were nice and cool. It does retain the settings for both compartments when I turned on the car.
*** Stay tuned for another update!! *** We will be taking the cooler on a day trip with us next weekend. We will have the insulated cover installed as well as a portable battery pack to power it while the car is off. We will be bringing snacks, sandwiches, and drinks with us for lunch. It is overkill, but want to run it through its paces.
===================== Original Review ============================
First off, I'm glad that I opted for the largest model of the Dometic line. I have read reviews that the model they purchased was a bit on the smaller side. With the feedback I researched on, that's what sold me on the largest model. I am very glad that I paid more for the larger model.
This thing is heavy when it's empty! This cooler is not designed to take to the park, or a casual outing. We live in a rural area, where the closest Costco is 2 1/2 hours away. When we go, we stock up on quite a bit of groceries to last us for a few months.
The first one I received was defective. The box looked very shabby with all corners looking like hell. There was a small puncture in the side, but upon inspection the cooler didn't sustain any damage on the side. When I took it out, I plugged it in and powered it on (Tried). The fan came on, but no lights. I then started looking at the lower left hand side of the cooler (Vent side). It's like it was dropped on that corner from a high distance. The plastic vent was pulled away and I saw compressor oil. I was very sad. The only reason why I'm including this, is when you purchase this, if if shows ANY signs of damage, open it up while the delivery driver is there and verify it all checks out and powers on! My replacement arrived yesterday and the box was in great shape, and no damage! I'm a happy camper!
I immediately set the freezer to 0 and the fridge side to 32. Both were showing an internal temperature of 86 degrees F. It took about 3 hours to cool down to the set temperature. The fridge side was a bit cooler than 32 (28), and the freezer was 0. This cooler is super quiet! The fan is constantly running when it's plugged in. It has a pleasing low hum which is very quiet (Did I mention this?). I could sleep by this during the night. This is the only sound you will hear. I didn't hear *any* compressor noise. The handles are of high quality with a great feel when you use them. All of the corners are protected with reinforced plastic. The seals on both lids is superb! I actually had a bit of a time to unlatch the freezer side (Larger compartment) with the vacuum it created! Both lids are of high quality, and can be reversed if needed. Both compartments have a LED light that comes on when you open up the compartment. It will also blink when the lid isn't fully shut. Both A/C and D/C cords are of great quality. The wires are of a larger grade, which I feel is overkill due to the low power consumption of this unit. The lengths of both cords are adequate for my needs.
The wireless function on this model is normally turned off. It's easy to turn it on and to connect. I downloaded the iOS application on my phone and associated my phone with the wireless network it generates. The app is very easy to operate. You can set the temperature on both sides, as well as view the actual temperature of them. You can set an alarm for either +/-6, or 9 degrees. I do like the feature that you can rename the wireless connection and change the password to your liking. My girlfriend wanted the SSID changed to "Mr. Freeze", which is appropriate. The ONLY negative that I have (Which is negligible), is that when your phone is connected to the cooler, you don't have any internet. Mr. Freeze isn't a hotspot (Maybe next version). So, in my case I have to either turn off the wireless function, or what I opt to do is "Forget it". This is the only reason why I dropped it to 4 stars. This could be rectified if they opted for a Bluetooth wireless radio (Hint, hint).
I haven't had this out in my car yet, but I'm sure this cooler will not have any issues keeping things to temperature when it's hot out. Dometic has the nitch for making quality fridge/freezers for RV's as well as other mobile products. I will be updating this review down the road if anything changes.
I don't know the power draw while connected to A/C or D/C. From my investigations, it's very low. I do plan on getting a GoalZero with solar panels to power it for emergencies. From my research, these are very efficient with what little power they do consume.
If you are like me and are trying to decide on a size of cooler, don't opt for the smaller one that you 'think' is adequate. Go up 1 or 2 sizes from your initial thought. If you get a smaller cooler and run out of room, you will be upset. If you get a larger cooler and not use all of the space, you will feel much better that you have the capacity to add more.
Did I forget to mention this is a BEAST and super quiet?! If you are out camping and see a wireless hotspot named "Mr. Freeze", come on over, say "Hello" and enjoy a super chilled beer with me.
That said, it's a great fridge/freezer. The unit is unique in that it's divided in to two halfs each with separate temperature control, with digital controls allowing for precise temp to be set, and the actual internal temp of each side is displayed during use. Each side can be used as either a fridge or freezer.
The internal removable baskets make organization and clean out pretty easy, and keep things upright. The depth is deep enough to hold items like soda bottles upright.
The quality of the build, things like the external plastic case, hinges, handles and lid latches, are all good quality.
For the size and price, it's one of the most energy efficient fridge/freezers on the market.
There is a known issue when using this with lithium batteries. If you plan to use lithium batteries to power this unit, I suggest reaching out to Dometic to get additional information, as they are familiar with the issue and do have several workarounds and approved solutions.
Great chest fridge/freezer when you need extra space for holiday gatherings, BBQ's etc, (I love not having to worry about ice.) It has also has served as an excellent primary fridge/freezer for my 40yo sail boat.
Do NOT regret it. This thing is AMAZING! I put two 100 watt solar panels on the top of my SUV a cheap $15 power charger unit in my truck charging a cheap 100Ah marine battery. I left it in my truck for a solid week, out in the hot sun, and the unit kept everything inside frozen solid. The solar panels kept the battery charged, and the battery kept the freezer going through the night. The motor in the freezer is quiet enough I can sleep next to it. I love the dual chambers and ease of the display console. I highly recommend the fitted sleeve that you can buy for it, it helps maintain the temperature and also protects your freezer from dings.
My #1 complaint about this company is that a freezer half the size costs almost as much as this big one. If they priced their smaller units more reasonably, I'd own one of those as well.
My #2 complaint is it doesn't have wheels. It's far too bulky for a single person to manage it, and wheels would have been helpful. I imagine the reason they don't do this is these freezers are best kept level and stable. If you dragged it around over rocks on wheels, tipped at an angle, you'd possibly damage it. I don't know for sure, but that's my guess.
This unit is perfect for installations where you don't want to move it frequently and want a lot of storage capacity.
